Shag “BALCONY ON SUNSET” • Chateau Marmont Hotel in Hollywood (40cm x 96cm)

This vertically long 2016 serigraph edition a tribute by SHAG to the famous Hollywood hotel built in 1927. In the mid-1930s, a Hollywood studio boss advised a couple of rowdy young actors new to town, “If you want to be seen, go to the Beverly Hills Hotel. If you don’t want to be seen, go to Chateau Marmont.”

For many years, that was true: Chateau Marmont, the legendary Hollywood hotel perched on the edge of the Sunset Strip, was one of the few places in the middle of movie-land where celebrities could carry on like civilians without the press, their bosses, or their spouses finding out what they were up to. In it’s heydays, Greta Garbo, James Dean, Clark Gable, Errol Flyn frequented the hotel to name the few. Even these days it is a hide out for Keanu Reeves, Britney Spears, Mick Jagger, Leonardo Di Caprio and others.

The “BALCONY ON SUNSET” serigraph limited edition (200 copies) is SOLD-OUT in the US.EDITION SIZE: 200 (2018)

FRAMING INFORMATION: Custom made 4cm wide brown with black textured wood frame with 2 cm wide orange wood fillet and covered with museum glass for archival longevity.

THE PROCESS OF CREATION: SHAG’s limited editions introduced in Budapest are produced using the silk-screen (serigraph) printing method. Serigraphy for additional color depth, saturation, density, and texture is a perfect match to SHAG’s painting style. He is collaborating with Kolibri Art Studio atelier in Los Angeles for decades for unparalleled quality at enormous sizes for always a small, limited edition of 200 serigraphs only. Anywhere from 10 to 25 colors (some colors are printed twice for optimum quality) with hand color-separation, required 2 months to print since it is very labor-intensive to complete these unique editions. His media choice is always the US-made, 100% rag 2 or 4-ply “Rising Museum Board” brand, acid-free, thick archival paper, only with 5cm margins left outside the live area. For the finish, SHAG requires a very expensive UV matte clear coat application made for silk-screen printing for preserving the extra longevity of the serigraph print.
